About This Event

Many successful products and services resulted from innovation no different from the innovation that takes place on University campuses. This presentation will look at some well-known products and services and the innovation that produced them. The presentation will show also that University innovation is most likely Disruptive Innovation, the most valuable form of Innovation. Social Innovation – whose objective is to solve community-wide problems – can produce a wide range of intellectual properties that help produce value and achieve the goals of the innovation effort.

New Mexico Rainforest University Center Fall Seminar Series

UNM Rainforest Innovations and the Innovation Academy are hosting their fall 2020 University Center Seminar series. The New Mexico Rainforest University Center provides entrepreneurial training and technical assistance at the University of New Mexico main and branch campuses. The seminars are free and open to the UNM community and the public via web access, but registration is required.

A certificate program in entrepreneurial capabilities is available to UNM students and community members thru UNM’s Innovation Academy. If interested in the certificate program as part of the seminar series, please contact Cecilia Pacheco at cpacheco@innovations.unm.edu.

Speaker Bio

Charles Valauskas is legal counsel to business ventures, non-profit organizations, and individuals involved in the development and commercialization of a variety of new technologies and creative products and services.

Mr. Valauskas speaks on a regular basis throughout the world on technological and intellectual property topics. Mr. Valauskas has also authored books, chapters of books, and articles on intellectual property related topics. Most recently, for the American Bar Association, he authored an article advising novices how to prepare intellectual property licenses more efficiently. Mr. Valauskas also wrote the chapter entitled The Other Intellectual Property: Thinking Beyond Patents that was published in the ABA’s book, The Technology Transfer Law Handbook, plus numerous articles including those published in the: Boston College International and Comparative Law Review, Hastings International and Comparative Law Review, and Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Newsletter.

He has appeared on the BBC World Series and in articles published in a variety of popular publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the ABA Journal, and Crain’s Chicago Business. Mr. Valauskas is a former adjunct law professor for intellectual property matters in Chicago.

Mr. Valauskas is involved in the activities of many organizations. Mr. Valauskas is on the Advisory Board of the Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Economic Prosperity of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. Mr. Valauskas is also a member of the American Bar Association’s University Intellectual Property Law Committee and a member of the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals “Future Look” Task Force. He was the Vice President for Industry Relations of AUTM and continues to serve on many of its committees.

Mr. Valauskas received his B.S. from the University of Illinois (Chicago), his J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law, and his LL.M. from the Northwestern University School of Law. Mr. Valauskas is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. District Court for Northern District of Illinois.

About the New Mexico Rainforest University Center

The University Center program is funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration to provide entrepreneurial training and technical assistance to individuals or small businesses who are looking to start or grow their idea. The platform for the training will be e-commerce, designed to assist any business with its digital presence.
