NMBio will host its next Lunch and Learn event on Wednesday, September 29. This first ever two-hour L&L program will run from 11 am to 1 pm. It will feature several speakers from Los Alamos National Labs.

About the Speaker

The  keynote speaker will be Dr. Amy Migliori. She will focus her comments on a selection of research and technologies ready for license at Los Alamos. Amy is a business development executive managing the biosciences portfolio at LANL. Her focus: the development, maturation, and transfer of bioscience-related technologies to industry partners to further the reach of LANL scientists while positively impacting businesses. To do this, she connects researchers with companies to develop strategic IP and partnerships. Currently, Amy is working to launch a new initiative to fund “commercially-geared” early technology development at the lab. She works to develop and execute meaningful partnerships to bring LANL technologies to market through licenses and Cooperative Research Development Agreements (CRADAs). “I try to see how things could be, how science can be transformative to industry,” she says. “I have the background and skills to make it happen.”

Amy had an extensive background in the life sciences before moving over to the business unit at LANL.  She previously held research positions at LANL and as a staff scientist at BASF where she developed custom industrial-application enzymes using bench and rational design techniques combined with powerful high-throughput and application-specific testing techniques. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst before moving on to complete her doctorate in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego, where she studied the mechanisms of viral nanomotors.

Other speakers from LANL will discuss programs available to help businesses access capabilities and expertise from research institutions across the state of New Mexico and mature laboratory technologies:

Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs: By including Los Alamos as a subcontractor (SBIR) or a research institution (STTR), a small business may utilize Los Alamos’ unique expertise and facilities when the requested capabilities are not available in the private sector.

The New Mexico Small Business Assistance Program (NMSBA). Through NMSBA businesses facing technical challenges can access up to $40,000 of the unique expertise and capabilities of New Mexico’s research institutions. At no cost to the business, small businesses can seek assistance from experts at New Mexico’s national laboratories, manufacturing extension partnership, and universities to overcome barriers to company success.

NM TRGR, a Technology Readiness Initiative provides up to $150,000 of technical support to a New Mexico business that a license to a NM laboratory technology or is engaged in a research partnership with a New Mexico DOE laboratory. It gives New Mexico businesses the ability to leverage research and technology development from Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories to expedite product development.

The New Mexico LEEP Program: Through immersive training and intensive technology validation, New Mexico LEEP allows innovators to rapidly advance their technology. This program gives immediate access to customers looking to adopt new technologies to solve a broad range of our nation’s toughest problems.
