NMBio Lunch & Learn – Discover Two of NM’s Bioscience Diamonds

Monday, August 26, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:15 pm

NMBio is delighted to bring presenters from two of its bioscience gems to its Lunch & Learn luncheon series on Monday, August 26.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Kent Kiehl. He is a Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience and Law at the University of New Mexico and Executive Science Officer of the non-profit Mind Research Network (a LRRI affiliate) — https://www.mrn.org. Dr. Kiehl conducts clinical neuroscience research of major mental illnesses and brain injuries. His laboratory makes use of a one-of-a-kind Mind Mobile MRI System to conduct research and treatment protocols with forensic populations. His laboratory has deployed the Mobile MRI to collect brain imaging data from over 3000 offenders at eight different facilities in two states. This represents the world’s largest forensic neuroscience repository. Dr. Kiehl will review recent developments in using advanced neuroimaging biomarkers for assessment of mental health conditions, traumatic brain injury, and risk for future antisocial behavior. He will highlight how the legal system, both civil and criminal arena’s, are consuming these biomarkers to aid in advocacy for clients. New avenues and markets will also be discussed.

Dr. Callum Bell, President of the Santa Fe-based National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR), is our second guest speaker — https://www.ncgr.org. Dr. Bell has over 25 years of research, development, and management experience in genetics, genomics and bioinformatics. He is a graduate from the University of Edinburgh with a Ph.D. in Arabidopsis genetics. He is currently pursuing NSF-funded research in plant and microbial systems; he has an adjunct faculty appointment at New Mexico Tech. Dr. Bell has significant experience working in technology startups, having received phase two SBIR awards for software and algorithm development. His experience offers perspective on life at the nexus of industry, academic and nonprofit research, with NCGR, in particular, providing a unique view as both a producer and consumer of sequencing and bioinformatics products.
